CASL and what it actually does
Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) is one of the stricter commercial email laws globally: it requires express or implied consent before sending commercial electronic messages to Canadian recipients, sets mandatory content requirements, and gives recipients a functional unsubscribe mechanism. In practice, this means Canadian-targeted email is supposed to be opt-in rather than opt-out.
CASL reduces the volume of unsolicited marketing email from compliant Canadian senders — but it does not prevent marketers from adding you to a list when you sign up for something (that is implied consent), and it does not cover every sender that targets Canadian addresses from outside Canada. A disposable address sidesteps the consent framework entirely: the address expires before implied consent can become a marketing relationship.
Where it works
- Canadian retail. Indigo, Hudson's Bay, Sport Chek, Roots — most Canadian retailers accept disposable addresses for newsletter discount codes. Order confirmation and shipping still go to the address used at checkout, so the same split approach applies.
- Download gates and reports. Industry publications, research firms, and media outlets gating content behind email forms generally accept any working address.
- Tech trial signups. Canadian-domiciled SaaS products and the Canadian subsidiaries of international SaaS vendors follow the same blocklist patterns as their US counterparts — smaller tools accept disposable addresses; enterprise vendors do not.
Never use for these Canadian services
- CRA My Account. Canada Revenue Agency online services (tax filing, benefit applications, RRSP room queries) require a verified, durable address. These accounts have tax and legal consequences.
- Provincial services. Health card renewal, driver's licence, vehicle registration, and social services vary by province but all require a permanent contact method.
- Banking and credit. Major Canadian banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC) and credit unions require a reachable address for regulatory notifications, e-transfer confirmations, and fraud alerts.
- Pension and benefit accounts. CPP, OAS, EI — Service Canada requires a permanent contact address for official correspondence.
Bilingual mail rendering
Many Canadian senders — government agencies, major retailers, and national brands — send multipart messages with parallel French and English sections, or route to separate French and English versions based on language preference. The temporary inbox parses and displays both MIME alternatives correctly. There is no language setting on the inbox itself; it renders whatever HTML the sender provides.
What is identical everywhere
Address generation, the 60-minute expiry, HTML sanitisation, blocked remote images and the receive-only restriction do not vary by country. There are no regional inboxes and no local data centres — this is one service with one set of rules.
