Why Disposable Email Domains Get Blocked

The technical and business reasons why services block disposable email domains, and how blocklists are maintained.

Disposable email domains are blocked not because services want to be difficult, but because disposable email undermines the assumptions that identity systems rely on. Understanding these reasons helps you anticipate where temporary email will work and where it will not.

Free trial abuse

The most common reason for blocking is free trial abuse. If a service offers a free trial that has real monetary value (software, streaming, SaaS), users can claim unlimited trials by creating new accounts with different disposable email addresses. This costs the service money and distorts their metrics. Blocklists are the primary defense against this pattern.

Vote and referral manipulation

Services that count accounts as votes, referrals, or social proof are vulnerable to disposable email.
