Browser fingerprinting is a tracking technique that works independently of email addresses. Understanding how it operates helps you recognize the limits of temporary email as a privacy tool.

What is browser fingerprinting?

Browser fingerprinting collects information about your browser and device to create a unique identifier. This includes:

  • User agent string (browser type and version)
  • Screen resolution and color depth
  • Installed fonts and plugins
  • Timezone and language settings
  • Canvas and WebGL rendering patterns
  • Audio context fingerprinting
  • Hardware concurrency (CPU cores)

These characteristics are combined to create a fingerprint that is often unique enough to identify you across sessions, even without cookies or login.

How it works with temporary email

When you use a temporary email address to sign up for a service, the service sees both your email address and your browser fingerprint. Even though the email address is disposable and random, the fingerprint remains the same across sessions. If you return to the same service with a different temporary email address but the same browser, the fingerprint can link the two accounts.

Correlation attacks

Services can correlate accounts across time by matching fingerprints. If you create multiple accounts with different temporary email addresses but the same fingerprint, the service can infer they belong to the same person. This is commonly used to detect free trial abuse, vote manipulation, and other patterns that disposable email is meant to facilitate.

Limitations of fingerprinting

Fingerprinting is not perfect. Browser updates can change fingerprints. Using different browsers or devices changes fingerprints. Privacy-focused browsers and extensions can randomize or spoof fingerprint characteristics. However, for most users with standard browser configurations, fingerprints are relatively stable.

Mitigation strategies

Browser isolation: Using different browser profiles or incognito/private mode for different interactions can reduce fingerprint correlation.

Anti-fingerprinting tools: Extensions like Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, and dedicated anti-fingerprinting tools can randomize or block fingerprinting techniques.

Device separation: Using different devices (phone vs computer) for different interactions creates different fingerprints.

The practical reality

Temporary email protects your primary email address from exposure, but it does not protect you from browser fingerprinting. For most low-value interactions (download gates, newsletter signups), this limitation is acceptable. For higher-stakes situations where you genuinely need anonymity, you need a more comprehensive approach that addresses both email and fingerprinting.
